about

Hypnagogia is French Aubervilliers-based composer NO3sis’ first album. The title stems from the state of hypnagogia, a transient state of consciousness in-between being awake and sleep that materializes when transitioning to slumber. When first theorized in 1848 by Alfred Maury, hypnagogia was linked to visual and auditory hallucinations of various lengths that appear as blissful torpor and sensory arousal interlace. Having studied this phenomenon and found openings for experimentation, NO3sis opted to compose his founding work in this state of altered consciousness. Hypnagogia is the output is this experience, an ambient composition drawing on pure aesthetics, sacramental visions and insights of the unconscious mind.

This production mirrors the circular and chaotic nature of existence in its lack of linearity. Traditional starting and ending markers are absent; the experience can be interrupted and resumed at any given time reflecting the shifts in perception and conscious attention characterising hypnagogic hallucinations. The artist appears as a spiritual guide summoning refined loops that usher the listener deeper into the abyss of his own psyche.

The artwork is the result of a collaborative effort between NO3sis and designer Frederick McSwain. Using an algorithm called Neural Style Transfer, images recalling the composition provided by Frederick were mixed and reworked so as to fit on a double-faced tape.
